Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
What is psychotherapy supposed to do?
Psychotherapy helps relieve psychological distress by exploring emotions, thoughts, and behaviors in a safe environment. It supports personal growth, improves coping strategies, and encourages more adaptive habits, all within a trusted, supportive therapeutic relationship.
What are the differences between psychotherapists, psychologists, and psychiatrists?
- Psychotherapists: Provide talk therapy using interventions to help you understand and adjust thoughts, emotions, and behaviors.
- Psychologists: Use assessments and therapeutic techniques for both diagnosis and treatment.
- Psychiatrists: Focus primarily on medical interventions, including prescribing medications.
Who could benefit from psychotherapy?
Anyone seeking support, insight, or personal growth can benefit. Common reasons include emotional distress, relationship challenges, trauma, significant life changes, depression, anxiety, or the desire to learn healthier coping skills.
How many sessions will I need?
Session length varies by individual goals and challenges. Some clients notice progress in a few sessions, while others continue longer for deeper exploration or ongoing support. Your therapist can guide you based on your goals.
Is there such a thing as ‘oversharing’?
No. Sharing openly allows your therapist to provide the best support. Honest communication, even about difficult topics, is key to progress.
Does psychotherapy really work?
Yes, when you actively participate. Therapy helps most individuals reduce symptoms and improve functioning. Bring an open mind, a willingness to explore your thoughts, and your commitment to change.
Can you be my individual therapist and my couples/family therapist?
To maintain unbiased care, I only see clients as either individual or couples/family therapy clients, not both.
Are your therapy sessions tax deductible?
No. Psychotherapy services by a Registered Psychotherapist (RP or RP Qualifying) are not eligible for medical expense deductions.
Will my health insurance cover sessions?
Many extended health plans cover psychotherapy, but coverage varies. Confirm with your insurance provider, as psychotherapy is not publicly funded under OHIP unless provided by a psychiatrist or GP.
Do you offer direct billing?
No. Clients pay directly and receive a receipt for insurance reimbursement.
What is your Cancellation Policy?
Please provide 48 hours notice for cancellations or rescheduling. Late cancellations or missed sessions incur a fee. Exceptions may apply in emergencies.
What if I don’t click with my therapist?
A strong therapeutic connection is important. It’s okay to seek another therapist who better suits your needs. I am happy to assist with referrals if needed.
