Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
What is psychotherapy supposed to do?
The goal is to alleviate distress by discussing and expressing emotions, to assist in changing unhelpful attitudes, behaviors, and habits, and to encourage more positive and adaptive coping strategies. Effective psychotherapy relies on a supportive and comfortable relationship with a trusted therapist.
What are the differences between psychotherapists, psychologists, and psychiatrists?
Psychotherapists are known for providing ‘talk therapy’; combining various therapeutic interventions designed to assist individuals in recognizing and altering challenging emotions, thoughts, and behaviors. Psychologists utilize assessment and diagnostic tools in tandem with therapeutic treatments, while psychiatrists primarily address mental health through medical means, including medication.
Who could benefit from psychotherapy?
Anyone looking to explore their thoughts and feelings in a supportive environment can gain insights and tools to improve their emotional well-being. People may seek the help of a psychotherapist for various reasons, including emotional distress, relationship issues, or trauma, significant life transitions, depression, anxiety, and/or the desire for personal growth or self-exploration. Additionally, therapy offers a space to learn healthier coping skills and receive professional support in navigating life’s challenges. Overall, it provides a safe environment for individuals to explore their feelings and enhance their emotional well-being.
How many psychotherapy sessions will I need to see progress?
The number of psychotherapy sessions needed can vary widely depending on individual circumstances, goals, and the nature of the issues being addressed. Some people may feel significant relief after just a few sessions, while others might benefit from ongoing therapy over several months, years, or a lifetime for maintenance. It’s important to discuss your goals and progress with your therapist, as they can provide guidance on the expected duration of therapy based on your specific situation.
Is there such a thing as ‘oversharing’ with my therapist?
No. Insofar as you feel comfortable, it’s important to share openly and honestly with your therapist so they can help you as best they can. While it takes courage to discuss your most troubling thoughts, their job is not just to listen to pleasant things. By openly addressing what troubles you, you can work together towards finding solutions.
Does psychotherapy really work?
Psychotherapy is effective when you actively engage in the process – as Kirsten says, “It works if you work it”. Research indicates that most individuals who undergo therapy experience relief from symptoms and improve their overall functioning. According to the American Psychiatric Association, approximately 75 percent of those who participate in psychotherapy see some benefits from it.
Can you be my individual therapist and my couples/family therapist?
No. In order to maintain an unbiased therapeutic relationship with each of my clients, I am happy to see you as either an individual therapy client or a couples/family therapy client.
Are your therapy services tax deductible?
No. Any psychotherapy services offered by a Registered Psychotherapist (holding an RP or RP Qualifying designation) do not qualify as deductible medical expenses for income tax purposes.
Will my health insurance cover the cost of my therapy sessions?
Many workplace extended health care plans do offer coverage for psychotherapy services provided by a Registered Psychotherapist (RP). However, I strongly encourage contacting your insurance provider to confirm whether my services will be covered under your extended health benefits plan. Currently, psychotherapy services are not publicly funded under OHIP, unless provided by a psychiatrist or a general practitioner (GP).
Do you offer direct billing for my health insurance?
No. We do not bill insurance companies directly. Once I receive your payment, I will provide you with a receipt containing all the necessary information for submitting your session to your insurance company.
What is your Cancellation Policy?
I ask that you please provide 48 hours notice for any cancellations or changes to your appointment. Clients who provide less than 48 hours notice, or miss their appointment, will be charged a cancellation fee to the card on file. Exceptions can be discussed when cancellations are related to health concerns, loss, and/or other emergencies.
What if I don’t click with my therapist?
If you don’t feel a connection during our sessions, please honour those feelings—there’s no need to feel guilty about this. A strong therapeutic relationship is crucial for effective therapy, and so I invite any and all feedback from clients to help strengthen our therapeutic alliance. It is also perfectly acceptable to seek out a different therapist who might better suit your needs and communication style – which I am also happy to assist with if you so wish. Finding the right fit can make a significant difference in your therapy experience.
